Just a friendly reminder.  We’ll need driver’s license numbers and birth dates on all patron records by September 1.  If you haven’t already done so, just stop in and we can scan your license.  A parent’s license number can be used for children.  You will be unable to renew your books online at home or download eBooks beginning in September, if this information is not on your patron record.  Thanks to everyone who has already taken care of this.

As summer winds down, we wanted to post photos of our last summer reading event, Animal Orchestra.  The kids had a great time listening to animal tales told by Johanna Ballou, while she played an accompaniment on her keyboard.  They got their own instruments to play along while they pretended to be the various animals in the story.

Over 40 children participated in this summer’s reading program, “Paws to Read”.  Their enthusiasm and generosity were amazing.  While meeting their reading goals, they also donated a box full of toys and treats, plus over $40 in cash to the Clinton County Humane Society.  Way to go kids!

The library will be closed all day Tuesday, July 29 for the St. Boniface Church picnic.  Come out for an awesome fried chicken dinner and try your luck at quilt bingo or one of the many other games.  We’ll resume normal hours on Wednesday, July 30, when we open at 10am.

Be sure to join us this Sat., July 19 for “The Animal Orchestra”, our last event of the summer.  At 11am, Johanna Ballou will lead the kids in making animal sounds and using their own instruments as she plays music and reads several classic children’s stories.  We’ll then have snacks and all kids who attend will get an attendance prize.  Don’t worry if you haven’t finished your reading log.  You have until the end of July to complete all your goals and earn all 5 prizes.

The War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission has been gracious enough to place a rotating selection of large history panels on display at the library for the next year.  During the month of July and August, we’ll have 4 panels depicting Native Americans, with particular emphasis on the Black Hawks.  Stop in this summer and see this great display.

On Saturday, June 28 volunteers from the Clinton County Humane Society were kind enough to bring some of the cats and dogs available for adoption to the library.  Patrons, young and old, were able to interact with the pets, feed them treats and give them lots of attention.  Our young patrons are learning about animals this summer through our reading program, “Paws to Read”.  Along with reading, one of their activities will be to donate money, a toy or treats to the Humane Society.  All during the month of July, we’ll have collection containers at the library.  Plus, any fines and fees collected this month will be donated to the Humane Society.

Over 20 youngsters and their families enjoyed our first summer event entitled Animal Science.  Our friend John from Animal Tales in Mayfield, KY brought a tarantula, a python, a giant bullfrog, a capybara and a miniature toucan for everyone to see up close and even touch.  We learned how large they can grow, what they eat, how fast they are and why they may or may not be good pets.

During the month of June, our local 4H Clovers and Cloveretts have filled our display case with pictures and examples of the many ways they  AND YOU can enjoy dairy products.  Stop in and see some of their projects.

Kids, ages 4 and up, get ready for this year’s summer reading program, “Paws to Read”.  You can register beginning June 16.  We’ll be having lots of fun again this year, with special live animal guests, games, activities, reading, snacks and prizes!  Don’t worry if you’ll be out of town, you can sign up any time after the 16th and read (or have someone read to you) on your own time to earn prizes.  Keep up your reading skills this summer and be ready for next school year, all while having a great time.

Along with the rest of the Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS) libraries, we will soon be requiring patrons to provide extra information for their records.  This is to protect you and help us with the integrity of our patron records, since IHLS now serves a population of over 2 million!    BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 1, 2014, ALL PATRON RECORDS MUST INCLUDE THE PATRON’S BIRTH DATE AND AN ID NUMBER, PREFERABLY A DRIVER’S LICENSE NUMBER.  In the case of children, we can use a parent’s ID or license number.  The next time you come in to the library, please bring your driver’s license and we can simply scan it in to your record.  That’s all there is to it.  Remember that on and after September 1, if you want to check out items, download eBooks, search or request items, you MUST have an ID number and birth date in your record.  We thank you for taking care of this as soon as possible.
